Retained austenite at room temperature is well known to be the main factor controlling the ductility in nanostructured low temperature bainitic steels. However, its effect on strength properties cannot be ignored. This article aims to elucidate the role of high carbon retained austenite in mechanical properties of nano bainite consisting of bainitic subunits and retained austenite films of almost 20-70 nm thickness with nearly 1600- 2200 MPa ultimate tensile strength and 20- 40% elongation. Results indicate that retained austenite influences the strength and ductility by TRIP effect and dislocation absorption during straining the samples, where its mechanical stability must be considered.
