Biological denitrification of potable water in the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor using ethanol
as the carbon source without carrier support was investigated. At the high nitrate loading rates, the carbon source
was limited. The effect of different COD/ NO3_N ratios was investigated and the optimum value of 4 was
obtained. However, at the nitrogen loadin rates of more than 3 kg NO3_N/ m3. d, granules became large, milky
white in color, attached to gas bubble and finally washout occurred. Consequently, by increasing recycle flow,
complete removal of nitrat from drinking water with stable granules in UASB reactor was occured at nitrogen
loading rate of 5 kg NO3_N/ m3.d, upflow velocity of 6 m/h and HRT of 10 min
