Abstract

The inclusion liquid for UASB startup from solid sediments of the distillery spent wash, which was supposed to be treated, was investigated. The treatment of the Ahvaz distillery spent wash was studied over a 90 day period. Operating conditions for start up a UASB reactor were hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 26 hr, organic loading rate of (OLR) 9.16 kg COD m-3 d-1 at 35±1°C. After three months granals with a high methane generator population were formed which reduced the COD up to 63% and generated 300 cc/hr biogas. .
