Type of Research Article
Keywords

Abstract
This paper deals with the distortion and failure behavior of the single lap bolted joints with similar and dissimilar substrates experimentally and numerically. Nonlinear finite element (FE) model has been used to simulate excessive distortions and failure modes of the assemblies. FE results show that elasto-plastic model has sufficient accuracy in predicting the distortion behavior of the models with only bearing failure. However, this model has less accuracy compared to other models with Mixed-Mode (Bearing + Cleavage) failure. Therefore, in this paper, an energy based failure criteria has been used to simulate the joint distortions and rupture. Results show that the joint behavior can be accurately simulated using the above mentioned failure criterion.
