Type of Research Presentation
Keywords desire, Lacan, Psychoanalysis, Motivation, Dr Faustus
Abstract Abstract It is as obvious from the play Dr Faustus by Marlow, the desire as an important literary issue and concept has been used by the playwright to get the intentions of the writer as much as possible. Lacan as a great theorist and critic frames the problem of desire as rejected attempts to link psychoanalysis with social theory, calming, “the unconscious is the discourse of the other…that human passion is structured by the desire of others and that we express deep feelings through the relay of others”. Desire, according to Jean Laplanche and Jean Bertrand Pontalis, is one of the most slippery terms in the psychoanalytic lexicon. The notion of desire many times moves human beings towards their aims and destinations which are may be their Utopia from their own point of views though sometimes the same desires may also destroy the life of the characters. Therefore, the present study aims to dedicate valuable information to the readers by studying the problem of the effect of desire concept in Dr Faustus’ characters based on Lacanian perspective which obviously reveals how desire motivates and shapes the ideas and deeds of the mentioned characters.
