In this work, suspension polymerization is applied to fabricate monodisperse polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) nanospheres with different diameters. Then, the artificial opal photonic crystals are fabricated with PMMA nanospheres using the vertical deposition via evaporation induced self-assembly method. Furthermore, the size of the nanospheres and optical properties of opals are investigated. It is shown that the concentration of the polymerization initiator plays a key role in specifying the size of the polymer nanospheres and consequently the optical properties of the opal photonic crystals.
