A new surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensing method based on Fresnel diffraction
(FD) is proposed and investigated by theory and experiment. The impact of the SPR on the
intensity and phase response of the proposed structure is evaluated using a modified
Kretschmann configuration. Compared to the conventional optical-phase-detection-based
Kretschmann configuration, in the proposed approach, it is only necessary to measure the
visibility of the diffraction fringes. The phase responses of the sensor, making it more
attractive for practical high-sensing applications.
