Abstract
Detective fiction slides the reader into the sea of crime, violation, unknown, and disorder where the reader is ought to employ the required means to reach the harbor and admire the grotesque but pleasant journey. How does one appreciate the vulgar voyage is the focal point of this thesis. It aims to direct the attention to three rationales—sublimity, order, and knowledge—behind the popularity of the genre. Focusing on Friedrich Schiller’s “Detached Reflections on Different Questions of Aesthetics”, sublime clarifies the reason for admiring violent and bloodthirsty crime. Order, being a necessity of any normal person’s life would not be appreciated if disturbed, so the restoration of order would be a relief that is examined in Peter Hahn’s “The Detective as Reader: Narrativity and Reading Concepts in Detective Fiction.” Knowledge, being the thirst of human being to obtain more which its pleasure is beyond expression would be the subject of analysis in “The Postscript to The Name of the Rose” by Umberto Eco. As a consequence, this research targets Postmortem, a work of one of the top listed contemporary American crime fiction authors, Patricia Cornwell for its destination.
