Abstract This study compares and contrast forty quatrains of Omar Khayyam’s Rubaiyat in Persian with its English translation by Edward Fitzgerald. Khayyam was a distinguished Persian mathematician, philosopher and poet. Rubaiyat is indicator of his philosophy and thought. It became famous in the English-speaking world by translation of Fitzgerald, the English poet who lived in the Victorian age. The present study aims to investigate the reasons Fitzgerald’s translation is greatly admired by the English readers in the Victorian age. There are some factors which have important roles in translation. Among them culture and ideology are of prime importance. The differences in cultures and ideologies of source and target texts may force translators to intentionally and unintentionally manipulate and rewrite the source text. The present thesis will determine the extents that cultural and ideological manipulation took place in Fitzgerald’s translation. This study is of descriptive qualitative nature. The analyses is based on Dashti’s (1985) and Qazvini’s (1984) explanations. The theoretical framework is relied on Bassnett and Lefevere’s cultural manipulation theory. The macro analysis of the ideology in the Victorian age and superiority of the West to the East is studied according to Edward Said’s Orientalism (1977).

این تحقیق چهل رباعی از رباعیات فارسی عمر خیام با ترجمه انگلیسی ادوارد فیتزجرالد را مقایسه و مقابله میکند. خیام ،ریاضی دان، فیلسوف و شاعر برجسته ایرانی است. رباعیات بیانگر فلسفه و اندیشه اوست. این اثر توسط ترجمه فیتزجرالد ، شاعر انگلیسی که در دوره ویکتوریا زندگی میکرد ،در جهان انگلیسی زبان مشهور شد. پژوهش حاضر قصد دارد تا دلایلی که باعث شد تا ترجمه فیتزجرالد مورد تحسین خوانندگان انگلیسی دوره ویکتوریا قرار بگیرد را بررسی کند.فاکتور هایی وجود دارند که در ترجمه دارای نقش های مهمی هستند. در میان انها فرهنگ و ایدئولوژی دارای اهمیت بالایی میباشند. تفاوت های فرهنگی و ایدئولوژیک متون مبدا و مقص
