Abstract
Translation of wordplay is one of the most challenging tasks of every translator, particularly translating for children. The present study will focus on Shakespeare’s comedies, as the greatest master of wordplay in English literature. This study will be a case study which will seek the significant role of the translator in translation of wordplay and his/her stylistic shifts which may determine a particular translator profile. The chosen material consist of three Shakespeare comedies, namely, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, “Much Ado about Nothing”, and “Taming of the Shrew”, their correspondences in the Lambs’ Tales from Shakespeare and Persian translations of them by Eghtedari and Karimzadeh. By identifying the wordplay according to Leigh’s (1994) taxonomy of wordplay, the current study by applying Lefevere’s (1992) concepts of “rewriting” and “manipulation” and Pekkanen’s (2010) concept of “style” will explain how wordplay can be manipulated and translated for the younger audience. The findings of the study will be helpful for those who are interested in children’s literature and translation of wordplay as a problematic task for literary translators.
