Abstract
This paper relies on the finite element method to find the safe factor considering the economical aspect to design members outside the short shear links with/without stiffeners constructed from low-yield-point (LYP) steels with nominal yield strength of 100 and 225 MPa. To this end, 147 I-shaped shear links with link length ratios in the range of 0.34–1.83 were numerically analyzed and compared. According to nonlinear finite element results, the classification of short links based on the link length ratio parameter, which has been used in past researches as a convenient measure of yield behavior, does not represent the actual characteristics and behavioral differences between short links. Accordingly, an effective parameter, namely non-dimensional plate slenderness, is introduced in the article. This parameter is employed to investigate the behavior of short links. Finally, the finite element results were used to modify the AISC341-16 design equation for predicting the maximum shear forces generated by the fully yielded and strain hardened shear links.
