Abstract
This article attempts to propose a new classification method to classify the overstrength factor of steel shear links with or without stiffeners. To this end, an effective parameter, namely non-dimensional plate slenderness (NWS), was employed to categorize the available experimental results on the overstrength factor of shear links made from various steel grades. Based on the results, the overstrength factor increases with decreasing NWS parameter. Furthermore, it was concluded that the overstrength factor of 1.5 appeared to be reasonable for links with a NWS of larger than 0.40. However, a greater overstrength factor is possibly required for links with a NWS of less than 0.40. Therefore, to have a safe design in accordance with AISC Seismic Provisions, it was proposed for selecting a shear link with a NWS of greater than 0.40.
