Abstract
|
The purpose of this study is two-fold: first, the study attempts to find out whether there are any differences between experienced and novice translators in applying Venuti’s (1998) domesticating and foreignizing strategies in translating literary texts. Second, the researcher tries to see whether different Persian translations of literary works do justice to English literary works' cultural and ideological image by investigating the extent of cultural and ideological manipulations using Zauberga’s (2004) ideological manipulation model. To this end, five English novels and their Persian translations done by experienced and novice translators were compared using Zauberga’s ideological manipulation model and Venuti’s (1998) procedures for domestication and foreignization. According to the study, novice translators favour domesticating strategies more than experienced translators do. The study also depicted that by explaining and familiarizing foreign and exotic cultural words of the original work, novice translators change the image of the English literary texts to achieve the transparency, fluency, and comprehensibility awaited by the target readers. Moreover, novice translators appear to be more conscious of the market demands by appreciating the readers' needs and paying more attention to the TT’s intelligibility. These factors also help the translators enhance the acceptability of their translations in the view of publishers to increase the number of copies printed or reprinted.
