Abstract
As media and literature coexist, transmedia storytelling has become an intelligent strategy to secure the shelf-life in the market. This promoting act can support the acclaim of several mediums cotemporally including visual and text-based. The recent transmedia example, The Handmaid’s Tale by Canadian author Margaret Atwood, narrates the story of a handmaid named Offred deprived of her humanitarian rights by the state of Gilead, her resisting plot, and the overthrow of the regime through three artistic works. This thesis focuses on a comprehensive look into the story world to epitomize the handmaid’s journey as what every man can experience. To understand the role of language, time, and space, Mikhail Bakhtin’s perception of the concepts “Chronotope,” “Dialogism,” and “Carnivalesque” are espoused in an attempt to justify the handmaid’s connotations such as hope, resistance, and human rights. Considering The Handmaid’s Tale series, the novel The Handmaid’s Tale, and its sequel The Testaments as a transmedia, this study avouches for the parallelism between Offred’s journey and modern man’s anguish. It elucidates on temporal and spatial elements that heighten the resistance, the discourse that challenges the autonomy of the state, and the moments of carnivalesque that prompt the voice of the silenced.
