Abstract

The research in audiovisual translation is undoubtedly what has been given significant attention in recent years, and there are various ways researchers could investigate translation phenomena with audiovisual and multimedia considerations (Chaume, 2018). The contemporary era is dealing with movies being translated instantaneously into different languages via both forms of dubbing and subtitling. The translation of movies is intended to make the audience of a different culture communicate and understand the context of the movies; however, the final product somehow comprises unnatural translations or acceptability issues (Bravo, 2005). Considering the fact that the dubbed language or translated language contains un-well-formedness and unnaturalness, the movies' dialogues in nature seem to have an amount of unnaturalness in their original language due to the fact that the dialogues are written beforehand to be spoken later on. However, the translators may play their part, producing unnatural-sounding translations which get their way to the dubbing studios and subtitles, all of which are eventually viewed by the final or end-users. This study intends to compare the professionally dubbed movies of Iran's national television with their corresponding fan-subbed versions in order to examine them in terms of their naturalness difference. Here, we aim to do a comparative analysis of the selected items to differentiate how professional translators at Iran’s television and fansubbers have performed translating the same movies. We also pay attention to the unit of translation taken by the translators based on their final statements in both dubbed versions and subtitled versions. This way, it might make us able to understand how professional and fansub translators use different sets of translation units which may affect the naturalness of their translations.
