Abstract
This paper investigates the Persian translations of English political reports on Iran carried out in Iranian authoritative state-run news agencies in 2022. It seeks to provide an account of how evaluative resources are conveyed and reframed in Persian translations. A triangulation of methods is used to provide a coherent analysis of interpersonal meaning and evaluative resources at different levels: lexico-grammatical, textual and contextual. The methodology chosen for the purpose of this study is the combination of corpus and discourse analytic methods that operate within the tradition of descriptive translation studies. The translations are compared with their English source texts using appraisal theory (Martine and White, 2005) as a micro analytic framework and Fairclough’s model of critical discourse analysis (1995a, 1995b) and Baker narrative theory (2006) as the exploratory framework that allow for the contextualization of findings and explanation of translational behavior. The paper contributes to the field of translation studies in a number of ways such as the development and testing of a new combined theoretical framework to analyze the evaluative resources and ideological positioning within the tradition of descriptive translation studies.
