چکیده
George Bernard Shaw is considered as one of the most important dramatists of English and Irish literature. He was born in (1856-1950) Ireland and his ideas were influential for modern drama. The present study aims to evaluate Shaw’s Major Barbara in order to elaborate on the necessity and importance of university education for making a balance between romantic idealism and economic realism. This study is going to analyze the role of university education in Shaw’s ideas and his play Major Barbara in order to evaluate this role for making a balance between two opposing ideologies. Looking through Shaw’s ideas from this point of view is very unique and significant. Whereas previous studies have focused on Shaw’s socialist beliefs or his critics about capitalist systems, this study tries to have a new attitude toward Shaw’s attitude and his play. Therefore, this new outlook toward Shaw’s ideas and beliefs might expand our knowledge not only about his plays but also about his mindsets. Moreover, this study attempts to have a deep understanding of the characters in order to assess their ideas about romanticism, realism and university education. Hence, from this point of view, this study is significant because it can extend our knowledge about these ideologies. As stated above the main goal of this research is to analyze the role of university education and intellectual people as mediating force between opposing ideologies. Therefore, the primary goal of this study is to give a detailed text analysis of the play including the characters dialogue, Shaw’s own ideas and beliefs and the solutions he gives in order to evaluate the role of this forcing mediation. Furthermore, this study will give a better understanding of two opposing forces the economic realism and spiritualism.
