چکیده
The examination of women's objectification and resistance in The Edible Woman and Woman at Point Zero becomes highly relevant in an era where neo-liberal capitalism and enduring patriarchal systems within globalized politics continue to commodify women's bodies across geopolitical borders. Recent feminist research underscores that commodification functions not merely as an economic situation but as "an ideological regime which conditions the subject's experience and limits her/his agency" (Deckard 245). Contemporary relevance is heightened by the continued prevalence of gender-based violence, workplace exploitation, sexual harassment, and the systematic reduction of women in Western consumer markets as well as within Arab cultures to aesthetic objects and reproductive capacities. By examining the ways Atwood and El Saadawi utilize literary techniques to uncover and challenge objectification, this study contributes to debates around the political capacity of feminist literature and the various methods through which women practice resistance and reclaim control over their bodies. The comparative aspect challenges a problematic tendency in feminist scholarship to separate Western and Arab feminist literatures as mutually exclusive, thereby replicating the very orientalization that obscures the transnational fact of patriarchal oppression and the universal character of female resistance strategies. As postcolonial feminist scholar Anastasia Valassopoulos notes, understanding contemporary Arab women writers requires recognizing how they engage with "cultural and political representations" that transcend geographic boundaries (Valassopoulos viii). An understanding of how these authors articulate the body as a site of political contention can inform current debates on bodily integrity, consent, sexual violence, and subjectivity reclamation in an age of increased commodification.
