The Old Man and the Sea which was published in 1952 by Ernest Hemingway is still regarded as one of the most timeless works of American literature in modern times, acclaimed by its narrative simplicity and richness of meaning. In such a symbolic structure the sea itself becomes the main metaphor, concurrently symbolizing both life and fate, on the one hand; as well as the psychic test-ground of human resistance, on the other. This study is important, in that it concentrates on a central and underdeveloped idea within The Old Man and the Sea: the sea as a spiritual and hermeneutical world. This study seeks to understand the sea in The Old Man and the Sea as a symbol that represents both human struggle and spiritual transcendence in Hemingway's story. Through therapeutic narrative analysis techniques (mythological, symbolic, and stylistic), the investigation will analyze the contextualization of Santiago's bond with the sea, which corresponds to common threads of persistence, dignity, and sacrifice.
