Abstract
In Great Expectations, through the protagonist, Pip, Dickens illustrates how historical context, gender roles, and psychological factors significantly impact the process of moral development across different stages of life. This study examines the evolution of Pip’s personality, offering a deeper understanding of the ways in which these forces collectively shape an individual’s ethical growth. Studying Pip’s moral development in Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations is important because it shows how history, gender, and psychology together affect the growth of a character in Victorian society. Many studies have looked at Dickens as a social critic or at the novel as a Bildungsroman, but fewer have explored how these three elements work at the same time in shaping Pip’s ethical journey. This research examines the challenges and experiences that Pip, as the young protagonist of the novel, faces and analyzes the impact of these factors on his moral development and character formation. It also examines the role of gender and social expectations in guiding the behavior, decision-making, and experiences of the characters in the novel Great Expectations.
