Abstract
Since the plasma becomes magnetized under the external magnetic field, the nonreciprocal magneto-optical effects can be observed and controlled by changing various parameters of the plasma medium, such as plasma density, effective collision frequency, the thickness of the plasma layer, and the external magnetic field, which is not possible in usual PCs. Meanwhile, plasma under a magnetic field has one extra parameter which is called gyro-effective frequency. The left- and right-hand polarizations of magnetized low-temperature plasma have the negative and positive values of the gyro-effective frequency, respectively. Therefore, one can control the PBG of the wave with different circular polarizations by varying the applied magnetic field. These features provide a means of achieving active band gap and defect state pass-band tenability at relatively high rates by the ability to vary plasma density. These rates, limited by the ionization or recombination rates of the plasma, can be significantly higher than those limited by mechanical, thermal, or fluidic time scales. The technical applications of PCs containing the plasma are now increasing widely in plasma lens, plasma antenna, plasma stealth aircraft, etc. Also, for plasma diagnostic purposes, photonic crystals .containing plasma can be used to measure plasma density by resonance cavity diagnostic procedures
