Abstract
This research holds significant theoretical, literary, and contemporary relevance. Firstly, it provides a substantial theoretical contribution to Brontë studies by systematically introducing a Foucauldian framework, moving the critical conversation beyond established feminist and Marxist paradigms. It shifts the analysis of power from a model of personal oppression to one of impersonal, systemic discipline, thereby offering a more nuanced vocabulary to decode the novels' intricate social mechanics (Foucault, Discipline and Punish 195-228). Secondly, the study carries significant methodological and interdisciplinary value. It demonstrates the potent applicability of postmodern critical theory to 19th-century literary texts, bridging historical periods and disciplines. By treating the novels as "case studies" of disciplinary society in formation, the research illuminates how literature can prefigure theoretical concepts, validating fiction as a crucial archive for understanding the historical development of social control (Armstrong 12). Finally, the research possesses enduring contemporary resonance. The mechanisms of surveillance, normalization, and spatial control depicted by the Brontës find clear parallels in modern digital and social structures. Analyzing the panoptic gaze at Lowood or the confining architecture of the Victorian home sharpens our critical tools for examining today's discourses around privacy, gender policing, and institutional power. Thus, this investigation not only re-contextualizes the Brontës' classics but also affirms their continued urgency for understanding the persistent dynamics of discipline and resistance in our own world (Butler 23).
