Abstract
The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is a subset of the Internet of Things (IoT) that specifically refers to industrial automation. IIoT connects automation devices such as sensors, actuators, and PLCs (programmable logic controllers) to the Internet and to each other. From smart microwaves that can automatically cook food for a specific time to autonomous cars that can determine the route between origin and destination, they have the ability to connect to the industrial Internet of Things. IoT in the insurance industry, IoT in the construction industry, etc. are some of the applications of this field of technology. Although IoT and IIoT share many common technologies, including cloud platforms, sensors, connectivity, machine-to-machine communication, and data analytics, they are used for different purposes. IoT applications connect devices in multiple sectors, including agriculture, health and healthcare, consumer and municipal services, and government and cities. IoT devices also include smart appliances, fitness trackers, and other applications that generally do not pose a threat or emergency if something goes wrong. On the other hand, the applications and equipment used in the Industrial Internet of Things are of a hazardous industrial type, such as machines and devices in the oil and gas industries, municipal energy services, heavy industrial production lines, etc. Therefore, system failures and problems in the IIoT infrastructure can lead to the creation of dangerous or even life-threatening situations for citizens. It should be noted that IoT networks are also vulnerable in other ways, such as: energy supply, limited infrastructure, security threats, and update speed. Given the threats mentioned, it is necessary to protect access to resources, data, and IoT infrastructure with new and efficient security protocols.
