Mentha logifolia Antimicrobial MIC Escherichia coli Urinary tract infection
چکیده
Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common types of human infections. Approximately 150 million cases of urinary tract infections occur per year occur world-wide. The most common cause of UTI is Escherichia coli. Recent studies suggest an increasing antibiotic resistance of this uropathogen. So the aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activities of Mentha longifolia extracts against uropathogenic E. coli isolates. A total 30 E. coli isolates was collected from midstream urine specimens of patients examined for urinary tract infection in Emam Hossein Hospital, Hashtroud, Iran. Different extracts were prepared with n-hexan, dichloromethan and methanol. Antimicrobial properties of the extracts were performed isolates by Standard Disk-Diffusion Method and Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MIC) of extracts were determined by Agar Dilution Method. The concentrations of extracts tested were 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200 μg/ml. The results indicated that the methanolic extracts exhibit high antimicrobial effects. So that 90% of the isolates having MIC of ≤1.2 mg/ml. 10% of the isolates having MIC of ≤0.6 mg/ml. Concentration of 0.4 mg/ml had no effect on the isolates. These MIC results suggest that this plant can be used as a natural treatment agent against UTIs caused by E. coli.
