In this research a novel thin film microextraction (TFME) method was developed using
zinc oxide nanoparticles/polyamide (ZnO NPs/PA) nanocomposite as extracting media.
Nanostructured ZnO was prepared by dissolution reprecipitation of micro-sized ZnO powder
ZnO NPs reinforced polyamide PA was prepared by solvent blending of ZnO NPs and PA in
formic acid[1]. The prepared nanocomposite was coated onto a filter paper as thin film
substrate by solvent exchange method. This process leads to formation of a thin layer of the
prepared nanocomposite onto substrate. The characterization of prepared ZnO NPs and ZnO
NPs/PA nanocomposite were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Xray
diffraction (XRD). The prepared ZnO NPs/PA nanocomposite-based thin film was applied
as an extraction device for extraction of ibuprofen in waste water samples in combination
with gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) [2]. The thin film preparation
method was investigated by studying the extraction efficiency of two thin films which were
prepared by solvent exchange method and casting method. Also the effect of paper filter as
substrate was evaluated. Furthermore, the effect of ZnO NPs doping level in the
nanocomposite on the extraction capability of the thin film was investigated and it was found
that 10 % doping level of ZnO NPs into PA has led to the best results. Box-Behnken design
(BBD) was employed to investigate and optimize important factors influencing the extraction
and desorption processes including extraction time, salt content, pH, desorption solvent, its
volume and desorption time. Finally the developed method was successfully applied to the
extraction and determination of ibuprofen in waste water sample, indicating the applicability
of the proposed method to determine such pollutant compounds in aqueous samples[3].
