Nowadays using heavy metal ions as lead, mercury and cadmium creates some serious
global warnings. Because after different industrial usages, these elements will finally enter the
environment and pollute water and soil. Hence many damages and toxicity of them can hurt
every living being and specially human beings. Heavy metal ions are being widely used in
painting, electronics, automobile and fuel industrials [1-3]. Lead is one of the most toxic and
dangerous heavy metal that releases into the environment by several processes including
waste and coal burning, construction, electronics, motor vehicles, stationary fuel, automobile
batteries, printing processes, pigments, photographic materials, volcanic emissions, metal
mining and smelting [4-5]. In this study, Mg-Ni Fe2O4 nanoparticles were firstly synthesized
and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)
and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Then, a simple, high performance and cheap
method proposed for the preconcentration and determination of trace amounts of lead in water
samples by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Preconcentration stage consists of a
magnetic solid phase extraction using Mg-Ni Fe2O4 nanoparticles. The advantage of this
extraction for preconcentration and measurement of lead ions is very obvious in trace amount
of environment water and wastewater samples. The optimum experimental conditions for the
lead assay were investigated. Under the optimized conditions, a calibration graph was linear
in the range of 0.5–120 ng.mL-1 with a detection limit of 0.634 ng.mL-1. The method was
successfully applied to determine lead in several real samples.Validation of the method was
checked by analysis of a certified reference material (NIST 1566b oyster tissue).
