چکیده
Translation is the act of transferring messages, ideas and meanings embedded in one language into another language. Since its essence is language, and language intermingles with culture, thought and society, translation accordingly gets intertwined with these concepts. Hence, in dealing with the rendering of certain rhetorical figures, translation of poetry is often regarded as perplexing and controversial. Rhetorical figures often carry a specific aesthetic function of language and they can be culture-bound. Hyperbole, as one specific type of rhetorical figures of speech, is using an extreme intentional exaggeration for making a point. It can evoke strong feelings and create strong impression. Hyperbolic statements are used for impressiveness and emphasis. The present study aimed to investigate the strategies used in translation of hyperbole in Hafez poetry from Persian to English. The method was descriptive and Newmark's (1988) model was used for analyzing the data. The findings revealed that hyperbole was used differently in different cultural communities of Persian and English societies, and it projected different effect in the perception of reality. While hyperbole was welcomed in the original Persian text, the English translator was not able to maintain it.
