Medicinal plants have a special value in biology, medicine and veterinary in terms of preventaion and treatment of disease. In recent years, the use of medicinal plants is increasing because of its beneficial effects, low cost, lack of side effects as well as its compatibility with environments [1]. Medicinal plants can be considered as a valuable source of antioxidant compounds, such as polyphenols, which can play an important role in absorbing and neutralizing free radicals [1]. Celosia cristata L. (Amaranthaceae) have edible leaves and flowers. The flower of C. cristata has been used as a food additive in Korea for a long time [2]. Up to now, the comparison of total phenolic and flavonoid content as well as antioxidant activity of C. cristatas from different parts (shoots, flowers and leaves) has not been reported yet. S o, the aim of this study was to evaluate the total phenolic and total flavonoid content as well as the antioxidant activity of aqueous extract from different parts of C. cristatas (shoot, flower and leaves). According to results, the highest total phenolic content was observed in the leaves (6.09 mg GAE/g extract) and flowers (6.05 mg GAE/g extract) followed shoots (1.75 mg GAE/g extract). In addition, the flowers contained significantly higher total phenolic content (5.5 mg QE/g extract), followed by the leaves and shoots. Also, study on the antioxidant activity showed that the aqueous extract of leaves of C. cristatas contained the highest antioxidant activity (IC50
= 37.7 µg/mL), while the extract of shoot possessed the lowest antioxidant activity (IC50
= 740.0 µg/mL). So, high correlations were observed in antioxidant capacities as well as total phenolic and flavonoid content of C. cristatas.
