چکیده
In literature, no effective method for evaluating the shear behavior of corroded steel panels has been clearly established. Therefore, in this paper, shear behavior of steel plates with random corrosion pits were numerically investigated using the nonlinear finite element analysis, including the load-displacement curve, stress distribution, failure modes, and the residual shear strength. Furthermore, based on an effective non-dimensional parameter of plate slenderness, a classification was proposed for corroded plates. According to the results, the sensitivity of the steel plates to corrosion is greater in compact plates than the non-compact or slender ones, especially for lower corrosion levels. The ultimate shear strength of randomly corroded plates is smaller than that of uniformly corroded plates in terms of average thickness loss, especially for higher corrosion levels. The difference between these two values could reach up to 20% in slender plates. That is while, in lower corrosion levels, the maximum difference is about 5%. In this regard, the results of finite element analysis were compared to values calculated by AISC 360–16 design specifications and a new design equation was proposed to predict the ultimate shear strength of corroded plates.
