Carbon quantum dots, having optical properties comparable to other quantum dots, have
many advantages such as low toxicity, compatibility with the environment, easy and cheap
methods of synthesis and biocompatibility. In addition, by controlling the size, functionalizing
the surface and replacing functional groups, their physicochemical properties can be
controlled [1]. Trivalent chromium is a pollutant that accumulates in industrial and
agricultural activities. Also, chromium (III) easily turns into hexavalent chromium, which is
classified as a carcinogenic compound for humans [2]. Ethanol fuels are considered as an
alternative energy source to fossil fuels, which are considered as a green energy source by
reducing CO2 emissions. The presence of very small amounts of metal ions in ethanol fuels
can accelerate engine corrosion or contribute to the formation of deposits in the engine. In
addition, the presence of these metals in engine fuel can cause pollution in large cities [3]. In
the current research, carbon quantum dots were prepared using plant leaves by solvothermal
method in ethanol. The effect of chromium(III) on the emission intensity of synthesized
carbon quantom dots has been investigated and a simple method have been proposed for
measuring chromium(III) in ethanol environment. Based on the obtained data, two linear
ranges of 2-20 and 80-20 mg/L were obtained for the measurement of chromium(III). Also,
the detection limit of the proposed method was calculated as 2 mg/liter.
