Traditional post-editing of translated texts is a painstaking task that demands considerable time and effort (Koponen, 2012). In addition, Costales (2011) argues that as global communication becomes increasingly integral to various sectors, including business, academia, diplomacy, and entertainment, there has been a surge in the demand for high-quality translations. In this era where time is of the essence and accuracy is non-negotiable, there arises a pressing need to explore the post-editing process for possible time-saving measures and innovations. In this context, the integration of AI represents an innovative solution which reshapes the translation process. ChatGPT, the AI selected for this study, is characterized by advanced natural language processing capabilities that can potentially reduce the time and effort traditionally required for translation-related tasks. However, the reliability of ChatGPT’s outputs is still to be assessed, in particular when languages other than English are involved, such as Persian. Moreover, there is a fundamental inquiry into the extent to which AI can replace the expertise of a human translator. These issues and the complexity of language and translation raise essential concerns about the reliance on AI in tasks that demand a deep understanding of human communication, such as translation and editing.
By evaluating the efficiency and quality of a translation method based on the use of ChatGPT’s AI to post-edit machine translations by Google Translate in the English-Persian language pair, this study will contribute to the existing literature on AI and machine translation, adding information on this still under-researched linguistic combination. Furthermore, the results of the analyses will inform the translation profession on the possibilities and limits offered by these novel technologies for the Persian language.
