This work is necessitated by the fact that analytical procedures are needed that are scientifically sound but practical in their usage to determine thioglycolic acid in various matrices. Current methods are accurate like chromatography or sophisticated spectroscopic methods but are expensive, need special apparatus and only well-equipped laboratories can be used, which is unsuitable when rapid field tests are needed or a routine quality control is required. Conversely, thioglycolic acid is a substance of great concern as it is frequently used as a component in cosmetics, the formulations of herbicides and as an ingredient in industrial processes and is possibly toxic and harmful to the environment. An indirect, colorimetric method including ferric-to-ferrous reduction linked to 1,10-phenanthroline complexation is developed to guarantee sensitivity and specificity, whereas the incorporation of smartphone-based development of digital images analysis contributes to its portability, low cost, and ease of use. This study fills the gap between field practicality and laboratory accuracy in validating smartphone results by comparing them to spectrophotometric results, which makes the smartphone technology useful and accurate. Finally, such an approach is required to facilitate the effective monitoring of the thioglycolic acid in the real samples to ensure the availability of the consumer safety, environment protection, and adherence to the regulations.
