Mentha longifolia L. is a perennial plant of the Lamiaceae family and is the most common
species of the genus Mentha found in Iran. Mentha longifolia is one of the plants that has attracted a lot
of attention due to its economic and pharmaceutical importance. Therefore, there is great interest in
finding areas which contain the highest yield of essential oil and extract with higher antioxidant activity.
In this paper, in order to evaluate the yield of methanolic extract and its free radical inhibitory effect on
DPPH, and also the content of phenolic and flavonoid compounds, Mentha longifolia was collected from
its natural source in Khoy, Ahar and Khuzestan cities at June and July 2018, and then the extraction
process was carried out. The results showed that the highest and lowest yield of extract was related to
Khoy and Khuzestan, respectively. Also, the maximum amount of phenol compounds (74 and 70 mg
Gallic acid per extract) was detected at methanolic extract of samples collected from Khoy, and Ahar and
the plant from Khuzestan had minimum amount of phenolic compound (45 mg Gallic acid per extract).
Moreover, the highest and lowest amount of flavonoids was related to samples collected from Khoy, and
Ahar. Then, the results of antioxidant activity indicated that the IC50 of methanolic extract were 151, 161,
and 291 mg/mL at the samples collected from Khoy, and Ahar, and Khuzestan, respectively. So,
according to the results, it can be concluded that Mentha longifolia collected from Khoy had high amount
of phenol and flavonoid compounds with high antioxidant activity.
