This paper presents the result of an investigation on the dynamic performance of Reinforced Concrete (RC)
columns considering unidirectional and bidirectional excitations. For this purpose, an advanced nonlinear
finite element method implementing the fibre beam-column model is used. Hypothetical rectangular and
circular columns are considered to investigate the different failure modes of RC columns. To represent a
realistic earthquake scenario, the base excitations are real as-recorded ground motions including mainshock
and one strong aftershock. It was found that multiple excitations due to aftershock has the potential of
increasing the damage of the RC columns. Also, the rectangular column is more sensitive to accumulative
damage highlighting the significance of cross-sectional shape and bidirectional loading.
