ABSTRACT
Analyzing characters in a literary work is one of the most significant parts of the analysis of every
work of literature. With this in mind, the present paper has attempted to have a critical review of the
character sketch of Ismene in Sophocles’s “Antigone.” What many essays put their accentuation on
is the adulation of Antigone and looking down to Ismene. In other words, Antigone is adulated for
being an intrepid person, and she is found an epitome of bravery. However, her sister, Ismene, is
found a chagrined person and is blamed just for being apprehensive and not as brave as her sister.
The main objective of the current work is to give a panorama of the character sketch of Ismene from
a different perspective. The way this paper sees the issue is in contradistinction to many views
about Ismene. The current paper aims to support this character as not being blameworthy for just
being grown up in a male-dominant society and liking to live in peace.
