چکیده
This research focuses on Harold Pinter’s plays The Collection, The Homecoming, and Betrayal to explore the psychoanalytic processes of character identity from the perspective of Reader-Response Theory, guided by Norman Holland’s literary psychology. Pinter’s unique dramatic style, often described as "Pinteresque," uses pauses, silences, and ambiguity to elicit varied responses from readers and audiences. The ambiguity of motives and fragmented identities in his plays offers a fertile ground for psychoanalytic exploration of how readers' interpretations are shaped by their personal psychological frameworks. The significance of this study lies in its application of Holland’s psychoanalytic theories, which focus on identity themes and subjective engagement, to Pinter’s drama—a combination not extensively explored in literary criticism. By examining how readers' individual experiences influence their interpretations, this study aims to contribute new insights into Pinter’s works and enrich the understanding of Reader-Response Theory. It also seeks practical implications for studying audience engagement with ambiguous characters, enhancing the psychological analysis of literary reception. The first goal of this research is to analyze how Norman Holland’s theories justify the reader’s psychological responses to ambiguity in Pinter’s plays. The second goal is to investigate how Pinter’s deliberate use of ambiguity provokes diverse interpretations. Finally, this study aims to demonstrate how readers construct meaning from Pinter’s selected plays, highlighting the dynamic interaction between personal identity and text-based ambiguity.
