Changes in the technological and social fundamentals of life call for basic transformation in the skills, capabilities and attitudes. This process of transformation requires a shift in the delivery and pedagogy used in the current education systems especially in developing countries. But in Iran, with the increased speed of information and telecommunication technology, the old higher education system doesn't have the capacity to meet current needs of the developing society and faces numerous challenges and crises necessitating fundamental reform and transformation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss challenges of higher education system in Iran and present ideas to promote integration of Information technologies into higher education for imparting standard, accessible, affordable and high quality education leading to the criteria of sustainable development.
