Abstract
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a fundamental mitogen involved in tumor growth by
stimulating of physiological and pathological angiogenesis. The present study investigated VEGF (-
634G>C) gene polymorphism in thyroid tumors susceptibility in the northwest of Iran. The genotypes
in the -634G>C of VEGF gene were determined using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment
length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method in 112 patients with thyroid tumors and 132 healthy
individuals. Software p-value calculator (2-way Contingency Table Analysis) was used to analyze the
experimental data. We observed that -634 CC genotype [odds ratio (OR) =0.38, 95% confidence
interval (CI) = 0.18-0.8; P=0.005] had a protective effect against thyroid tumors. Moreover, The -
634GC genotype [odds ratio (OR) =2.3, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.23-4.33; P=0.006] was
significantly associated with increased risk of thyroid tumors. The -634GG genotype [odds ratio (OR)
=0.92, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.5-1.7; P=0.77] was not related with thyroid tumors risk. Our
study revealed that the VEGF -634 GC genotype may be associated with increased risk of thyroid
tumors in the northwest of Iran.
