The period between 1800 and 1850 in the literary history of England has seen many radical changes in thought, ideology, and public’s opinion towards literature. These changes were so transformative that this age is commonly known as the Romantic era and has been hailed a second Renaissance. Poetry of William Blake and Seyyed Mohammad Hossein Behjat Tabrizi (commonly known by his penname Shahriyar) are widely appreciated due to their Romantic touch. Their works have amazing similarities that need to be explored for wider appreciation. Both poets rely on the elements of Nature for expressing their spontaneous and powerful feelings. This thesis attempts to examine the Romantic elements such as imagination, Nature, and nostalgia in Blake and Shahriyar’s poems. Descriptive-analytical research design of American school of comparative literature will be incorporated to study the poems of these two poets, from different time and places, from a comparative perspective. The study primarily focuses on the comparison of the poetic structure of these two poets by examining the Romantic elements, in order to delve into the depth of their preferences. Subsequently this thesis accounts for the commonalities and differences of these poets, concluding that Nature, imagination, and nostalgia as the main elements of Romanticism are clearly evident in Blake’s three selected poems, namely, “Mad Song,” “Auguries of Innocence,” and “The Chimney Sweeper,” and Shahriyar’s poem, Heydar Babaye Salam.
