The present work aims to study the effects of trauma and sin in Samuel Taylor Coleridge's The Rime of Ancient Mariner. As a Romantic poet, Coleridge focuses on the outside world and animals as opposed to previous eras that the focus was on the inner world or human nature. This study wants to examine the psychological effects of an incident that are manifested in the form of trauma and guilt. Ancient Mariner must come to the realization that he needs to face his demons and makes peace with nature and natural elements to be able to reach salvation. To do this, the researcher recourses to Cathy Caruth and Sigmund Freud to study this work based on psychological insights. Both of these psychologists suggest facing the traumatic event to get past it. Escaping and avoiding the trauma only makes everything worse. A healthy individual should get over his or her pain to live a psychologically healthy life. In The Rime of Ancient Mariner, the only way to find the way back home is also to face the trauma and bear the pain to reach the desired result.
