The proposed study is of immense scholarly and social significance. Firstly, examining the portrayal of marriage in Austen’s works through a feminist lens provides an opportunity to shed light on the agency and autonomy of female characters such as Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, Elinor Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility, and Emma Woodhouse in Emma, within the context of a patriarchal society. By exploring how these women navigate the expectations and constraints placed upon them in their pursuit of marriage, this study offers valuable insights into the challenges faced by women during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Understanding the complexities of their experiences not only enhances our appreciation of Austen’s literary genius but also contributes to a broader understanding of women’s roles and the power dynamics inherent in historical marital relationships. By contextualizing Austen’s novels within the feminist discourse of the time, this research enriches our understanding of her work and its significance as a form of social commentary. Moreover, it offers a nuanced understanding of Austen’s own feminist leanings, providing valuable insights into her progressive views on gender equality and women’s agency.
